Campaign to boost Primary school
children road safety
Nairobi, Tuesday 7th May…Research indicates that over 9,300 children in Kenya are involved
in road traffic accidents annually as a result of human error and carelessness.
This informs Vivo Energy Kenya’s 2013 safety day celebrations themed Alert
Today Alive tomorrow. The celebrations will focus on Pedestrian Safety
targeting the safety of primary school children.
Speaking during
the safety day event held at St. Georges Primary School, Vivo Energy Kenya’s
Supply Manager, Andrew Waititu said. “Children are more prone to accidents because
of biological limitations hence they are at a vulnerable stage in their lives”.
About 1.24 million road traffic deaths also occur annually
on the world's roads with the proportion of pedestrians killed in relation to
other road users being highest in the African Region (38%) according to the
World health Organization.
In relation to
this he added that, there is the need to empower school children with knowledge
and skills that will enhance their road safety now and in future which is in
line with the safety day’s theme.
Vivo Energy
Kenya’s Safety Day which coincides with the UN Road Safety Week seeks to
increase pedestrian safety in a bid to curb road accidents that claim the lives
of over 20,000 Kenyans annually.
The week is
aimed at drawing attention to the urgent need to better protect pedestrians
worldwide and contribute to achieving the goal of the Decade Action for road
safety 2011- 2020 to save 5 million lives.
Lollipop Project
CEO Daphne Kemunto reiterated that being tomorrow’s road users, the road safety
culture needs to be nurtured at an early age by teaching and providing road
safety to the children.
“It is with this
reason that the Lollipop project commits to the objective that children should
never have to negotiate dangerous traffic on their way to or from school.” She
added.
Vivo Energy
Kenya holds a safety day annually to enable celebration of their safety record.
It helps the company to focus its attention on the little things that we are
missing and that could result into an incident in either business or personal
lives.
This year the company
will promote pedestrian safety by demonstrating and training select primary
school children on road safety in Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa, hold a safety
procession, paint zebra crossings in partnership with the city councils and
erect traffic signs.
